I eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Why do I need to take supplements?

Dr. Northrup says. .

Nutritional supplements bridge the gap between adequate and optimal nutrition. Today, we’re living longer and we all want to be active and healthy into our seventies, eighties, and even nineties. Receiving the right amount of nutrients from food sources and nutritional supplements can help everyone achieve this goal.

So why can’t you get enough nutrition from the foods you eat? Because the guidelines for Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) are not equivalent to optimal nutrition. Instead, they were established to prevent diseases that result from gross vitamin deficiencies. First established in 1941 by the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), researchers looked at large populations to determine the minimum amount needed to prevent diseases like scurvy and rickets. These became thee Recommended Daily Allowances.

These RDAs have been updated only a few times in the last sixty years.

At the time, the board set the RDA for vitamin C at 60 mg—the amount needed every day to prevent scurvy—and determined the RDA for vitamin D to be 440 IUs (international units) – the amount required to prevent rickets. While it seems obvious that those levels are antiquated by today’s standards, many still hold on to the belief that you can get all the nutrition you need from a healthy diet. This is not the case.

That is why, for over two decades, I’ve recommended nutritional supplements and have taken them regularly myself. We now have many studies which document the benefits of regular vitamin and mineral supplementation. Taking a comprehensive, nutritional formula, rich in antioxidants, can help:

  • Enhance your immune system1
  • Reduce oxidative stress and damage from free radicals 1
  • Support healthy brain function
  • Protect your cardiovascular system
  • Enhance the health of your bones and joints
  • Promote radiant skin
  • Support your vision
